When I was told I had prostatitis at the age of nineteen I was prescribed ciprofloxin. If I had known what the next 14 years had in store I may have asked for cyanide. How do you treat muscle tension?
This was a question I was obsessed with for 2 years. I suffered from pelvic pain for 14 years and eventually recovered from pelvic pain through a bio mechanics movement programme called Restorative Exercise. I went on to train in this programme and became a Restorative Exercise specialist and for 2 years worked with other pelvic pain patients. My results however while teaching this programme were mixed. Some people did very well with some of my clients documenting their success on mens health forums and youtube. However others did not improve at all. This was not acceptable to me and I was determined to find an effective approach for muscle tension.
The mainstream view of pelvic pain is that it is caused by excessive muscular tension in the muscles in and around the pelvic floor. This is a view that I share. Where I differ from the mainstream view is in how this muscle tension is treated.
There is a very simple reason why the majority of treatments do not work for pelvic pain. The majority of treatments for pelvic pain focus on RELAXING Muscles. This is an ineffective approach. This approach leads to pelvic pain patients wasting time and spending thousands of dollars on ineffective treatments.
In order to treat muscle tension you should not relax muscles. You need to do the opposite. Muscle tension is treated by CONTRACTING muscles.
Muscles will only stretch if they CONTRACT while LENGTHENING
If you take only one thing from my website make sure it is the statement above. That knowledge will allow you to recover and save you time and thousands of dollars on ineffective treatment. If I had known this I would not have had to suffer pelvic pain for 14 years. I would have recovered from pelvic pain after a few months not years. I did not need endless trigger point treatment, I did not need manual therapy and I definitely did not need pudendal nerve surgery. The soloution was astonishingly simple. My research into muscle tension led to me training in a technique called Dynamic Contraction Technique. Dynamic Contraction Technique was created by USA Physical therapist Nic Bartolotta. Nic Bartolotta is a flexibility specialist to professional athletes and major sports teams across the United States. For the last year I have been working with Nic Bartolotta to design a Dynamic Contraction Technique Program for Pelvic Pain and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.
Dynamic Contraction Technique uses muscle contractions to treat muscle tension. It uses all three different types of muscle contraction – concentric, isometric and eccentric contractions to release the muscle tension in and around the pelvic floor. Muscles are very simple things. They can do one thing – Contract. That is it. They can either contract and shorten (a concentric muscle contraction) or contract while being forced to lengthen (an eccentric contraction).
In the Dynamic Contraction Technique course for pelvic pain you will be using resistance stretching to treat your pelvic pain. Let me assure you that you will not have performed this style of stretching before. This form of stretching is not taught on any physical therapy degree course in the United States or the UK. The style of stretching you will find in pelvic pain books is passive or static stretching. These forms of stretching are ineffective for treating muscle tension. A common questions I recieve is ''is this program like Amy Stein's Pelvic Pain program?'' The answer is no. This course is completely different to that program. Dynamic Contraction Technique uses muscle contractions in particular eccentric contractions as outlined in the video above and in the diagram below.
